Music in the Mountains Chorus Director

The Music in the Mountains Chorus is an auditioned community chorus, made up of about 85 singers from the region. We perform several times per year with the Music in the Mountains Orchestra, sharing our love of great choral music with the community.

Position Summary
The Chorus Director is responsible for rehearsing and preparing the Chorus in advance of their performances with the Music in the Mountains Orchestra; including responsibility for auditioning, re-auditioning, and training the best quality chorus members possible for repertoire set out by the Artistic Director. From time to time, the successful candidate will meet with Artistic Director to receive feedback and give advice regarding artistic and programming matters for the Chorus.

The Director will work with the Choral Committee as well as Artistic and Production teams to conduct the business of the Chorus: annually setting an appropriate schedule for weekly chorus rehearsals – typically Monday evenings September through June, attend piano and orchestra rehearsals in which the Chorus participates, attend all performances involving the Chorus, unless agreed to in advance with the Management and assisting with preparation, balance, and other musical matters.

The anticipated salary range for this position is 17,000-20,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

1. Creation and maintenance of a symphonic chorus prepared to perform at the highest artistic level possible. This includes singer selection through an audition process. The Director will consult with the Artistic Director as appropriate to ensure chorus preparation is in accordance with the conductor’s interpretation and wishes.

2. Conduct all chorus rehearsals and be in attendance for all performances to warm up the chorus and assist the Artistic Director with balance.

3. Opportunities may arise for the Chorus Director to conduct some pieces in concert and to conduct full concerts featuring the chorus as assigned by the Artistic Director.

4. Recruit, audition, and train singers to develop the Chorus to the highest possible artistic level

     – Serve as general administrator of all activities of the Chorus, including but not limited to rehearsal scheduling, choral seating arrangements, pre-concert preparation, facilitating auditions and reauditions.

     – Creation and implementation of policies for auditions, rehearsals, and other operational matters in consultation with the Artistic Director and chorus committees (when appropriate).

4. Consult with the Artistic Director about repertoire for the chorus.

5. Attend Music in the Mountains donor events where mutually agreed upon. Collaborate with the Marketing Department when requested in order to advertise concerts, auditions, and other choral events.

6. Other duties as assigned by the Artistic Director, or mutually agreed upon with the Executive Director.
