Download: SummerFest Heats Up Second Week

Nevada City, CA, June 25, 2013 – After a cool and rainy weekend, the temperatures are rising as Music in the Mountains (MIM) presents four more hot concerts in their SummerFest season.

Thursday, June 27, music and book lovers alike are invited to the Nevada Theater for Gregory’s Musical Book Club, the second of MIM’s Musical Chairs series. Members of the MIM Festival Orchestra will be hanging out with talented local authors Molly Fisk and Louis B Jones in this intimate, informal concert combining literature and music. Listen to Copland, Elliot McKinley and some ragtime favorites as the authors read from their work.

“This is definitely a new idea for MIM,” says Gregory Vajda, MIM’s Music Director. “Think a constant stream of reading and music, sometimes overlapped, sometimes parallel, sometimes one after another. It’s a great little theater to perform this kind of music in.”

On Saturday, June 29, MIM moves to the outdoor stage to present the Music of Queen, A Rock and Symphonic Spectacular. The MIM Festival Orchestra joins with a seven piece band and chorus members from throughout Nevada County to rock the Nevada County Fairgrounds with some of the best songs from a generation. “I hate to say it, but we are definitely going to rock you,” laughs Cristine Kelly, MIM executive director. “This is a production company that specializes in reviving the rock symphony genre. It is going to be out of this world.”

The Nevada County Composers Cooperative teams up with San Francisco percussion trio Rootstock and the NCCC Ensemble on July 1 to present some fabulous new music at the Amaral Center at the Farigrounds. This year Wet Ink explores percussion, choral, and chamber music from the likes of Richard Altenbach, Elliot Carter, Jerry Grant, Steve Reich, Mark Vance, Toon Vandevorst and Gao Wenjing.

And as tradition holds, MIM presents Happy Birthday USA on July 3 on the lawn at the Fairgrounds. “Its a great time for families to kick back under the stars as we strike up the band, and the orchestra, and the chorus,” says Kelly.” As always, we’ll have a flyover and a Marine Corps color guard. And this year, you can join our bike parade. Bring your family bikes all decorated in red, white and blue and help us launch the evening with a loop around the most beautiful fairgrounds in California.”
