MIM Launches Classical Season Sunday, April 17
Nevada City, CA (April 17, 2011) – Music in the Mountains (MIM), the largest classical music organization in the Sierra Foothills, presents its first chamber orchestra concert of the organization’s 30th anniversary year on Sunday evening, April 17 at St. Joseph’s Cultural Center in Grass Valley. The 7:30 p.m. concert, under the direction of MIM artistic director Gregory Vajda, will feature the orchestra’s principal players.
Local actor Bob Rossman will narrate Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale” – a Russian take on the Faustian dilemma. “It’s very exciting to mix art forms,” comments Vajda. “Rossman has received rave reviews in Sierra Stages’ performances and many others. He adds another layer of art to this concert.”
The April 17 concert programs also includes Prokofiev’s “Overture on Hebrew Themes,” based on a group of Jewish folk songs, featuring Vajda on clarinet. The two other pieces will be Janacek’s “Mladi” (translation: youth), which he wrote to celebrate his 17th birthday, and Martinu’s “La Revue du Cuisine” (translation: The Kitchen Review), originally written as a humorous jazz ballet.
To celebrate the opening of the 30th season, a complimentary champagne, coffee and dessert reception follows the Saturday and Sunday concerts. Tickets for the concert may be purchased online at www.musicinthemountains.org or by calling the box office at (530) 265-6124.
